From 'Walk with Me' for Lent 2019 - Living a Holy Life
St. Francis could be overwhelmed with gratitude before a piece of hard bread or praise God for the breeze that caressed his face. (Gaudate et exsultate 127)
John 5:31-47
'You diligently study the scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me for life.'
Jesus turned our idea of greatness on its head; he turned it upside down. The greatest is the least, the first is the last, the humble exalted, the exalted humbled. Jesus asked his disciples: 'For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table?' Is the waiter greater than the one who dines or the cleaner greater than the landlord, or an employee greater than the boss? We understand social structures and hierarchies, they are everywhere: at work, at play, in every aspect of life. However, Jesus answers his own question: 'But I am among you as one who serves.' Greatness is about service, putting the interests of others first and laying down our lives.
Lord, thank you for pouring out your grace upon the humble and resisting the proud; show me how I resist the grace to humble myself, and lift me up so I may humbly serve you and my neighbour.
