From 'Walk with Me' for Lent 2019 - Living a Holy Life

God is the Father who gave us life and loves us greatly. (Gaudate et exsultate 51)

Luke 18:9-14

'To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable.'

Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

The final section of the Catechism has the heading: Life in the Spirit. Its teaching highlights both the challenge and the adventure of the call to holiness. However, at its very heart and essence is a very simple message: God is love, live a life of love. When the New Testament refers to love it speaks of agape love, which is a quality of love that is different from say friendship or romantic love. Agape love, is rooted in self-giving and self-sacrifice. St. Paul unpacks this way of love, highlighting how practical and real this kind of love is, in his hymn of love is the most excellent way, the greatest fruit and blessing of the Christian life.

'An instant of pure love is more precious to God and the soul, more profitable to the Church, than all other good works together, though it may seem as if nothing was done.'

(St. John of the Cross)
