From 'Walk with Me' for Lent 2019 - Living a Holy Life

Jesus' words are few and straightforward, yet practical and valid for everyone

(Gaudate et exsultate 109)

Luke 11:29-32

'For they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.'

Lent is a penitential season, an opportunity to examine our lives, repent of our sin and seek God's forgiveness in the Sacrament of Confession. However, there is a self-examination or introspection which does more harm than good. Do you allow yourself the luxury of negative thoughts? Most of us do; we easily fall into the trap of dwelling on our weakness and shortcomings. The tendency to focus on our flaws and defects can be an indulgence and a very real temptation which can foster within us low esteem and a negative self-image. We can think that we are not worthy of God's love, when the truth is that no one is worthy of God's love but it is poured out in abundance and lavished upon us anyway.

Lord, help me to resist temptation by raising my eyes to you and saying, 'Lord, I am a poor sinner, but you can work the miracle of making me a little better.'
