Sunday of the Word of God - Third in Ordinary Time

Posted on 26th January, 2020

Enthronement of the Scriptures

In our Eucharistic celebration for the first 'Sunday of the Word of God', the sacred text was enthroned on a separate lectern in the sanctuary in order to help focus the attention of the assembly on the surpassing value of God's word. The priest who was to read the Gospel processed with it to the usual lectern so as to highlight the proclamation of the word of the Lord. If we had had two servers, they would have accompanied him bearing lighted candles to symbolise the light shed by this word. In his homily, among other things, our chaplain emphasised the honour that is due to God's holy word and encouraged the faithful to ever grow in their knowledge, love and appreciation of the gift of sacred Scripture, particularly the Gospels.

"Preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching."

(St Paul to St Timothy on the proclamation of and teaching about the word of God - 2 Tim 4:2)
